Cinco De Masa at Hammerling Wines Berkeley 5/5, 3-8pm
Just a promo. Not a real post, I will write one of those soon.
Hi friends,
It’s Cinco de Mayo, and this particular “holiday” fills me with a bit of discomfort.
I never celebrated this growing up, but I have distinct memories of drunken people in sombreros, sounds of stereotypical gritos being yelped by people in cultural cosplay. Not the most pleasant associations with “Cinco de Drinko.”
I distanced myself from it.
this year I wa easier to participate in the First Fridays block party at Hammerling and Donkey & Goat Winery. I was hesitant to say yes, because I was worried it would be full of white vendors making Mexican food, or people making their food more “Hispanic.” I voiced my concerns to Josh Hammerling, owner of Hammering wines and suggested we get as many Chicanx/Mexican/Latinx owned businesses. He was game and I sent him along some recs— that’s all I’m taking credit for, I was just a little nudge.
Most of the vendors are Latinx/Chicanx. I am there, and am making a very nostalgic menu with a double decker influenced by eating Taco Bell and Jack in the Box, but made with the utmost integrity. I sourced grass fed beef, organic cheese, Xulo Tortillas, a red masa crunchy shell. My way of taking ownership of Cinco the Mayo.
My Friend Fernando, Norte 54, De La Creamery, Kualis Salsas, and so many others will be there. It may rain later in the evening, come early.
